Why There Is a Need to Halt: The Reasons Behind the Call
In just a few months, tools such as ChatGPT have made it possible to outline the almost limitless possibilities of these models. Moreover, their evolution seems exponential, with a significant improvement in results between each version.
The signatories of the open letter point out that current AI systems are becoming competitive with humans for general tasks, which raises questions about the impact these technologies could have on society.
Among the concerns raised, we find:
- The spread of misinformation: ChatGPT has the unfortunate habit of being able to tell something completely false with surprising confidence. The signatories fear massive publication of false information;
- Job loss: in many fields, ChatGPT has shown surprising results, endangering thousands of jobs;
- The creation of non-human systems that could eventually surpass us: due to the architecture of AI, we are not in control of 100% of the process. Thus, in the face of a certain lack of understanding, we could quickly be overtaken by this rise;
- Loss of control over our civilization: the last and not the least, worthy of a science fiction scenario, the too rapid evolution of AI could endanger civilization.
