Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on the rise, and its scope of application is constantly expanding. Recent advances, particularly following the emergence of ChatGPT, the AI developed by OpenAI, are starting to raise concerns. Several big names in IT have recently signed an open letter calling for a pause in AI developments.
ChatGPT: A Revolutionary Type of Artificial Intelligence
Researchers have been imagining the potential of Artificial Intelligence since the birth of computing, spanning across multiple generations. For a long time, technical and material limitations have confined us to relatively basic AI.
However, AI has made considerable progress in recent months. OpenAI, for example, has developed GPT-3, then GPT-4, a model that offers impressive language processing and generation capabilities. We now have systems capable of competing with human skills in various domains. The well-known adage, “with great power comes great responsibility,” holds true, particularly in this context. Thus, with this power comes a number of risks for society and humanity.
Faced with the rapid advances of Artificial Intelligence, an open letter has recently been published, calling for a pause of at least six months in the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.
The signatories of the letter believe that this pause is necessary to assess and manage the risks associated with AI and to establish shared security protocols. Among the signatories, we find several renowned personalities in the technology industry as well as many academics. We can notably cite the signatures of Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak.
